October 3, 2013 | In December 2008, 23andMe received a US patent on a system for helping prospective parents choose traits for their offspring including hair color and disease risk. A company spokesperson says that the patent was originally filed because it could have applications for fertility clinics, but 23andMe, "never pursued the idea, and [has] no plans to do so." Wired
